Introduction

Kollel Chasday David was established in 1994, with 12 Avreichim. Each year, more Avreichim joined, until the Kollel even had to expand by opening additional branches. Today, with 279 Avreichim in 5 branches throughout Jerusalem, it is pulsating with the joyous sound of the most tremendous Talmidey Chachamim in the world! Aside from the foremost Poskim and Dayanim that it has produced, the exceptional Torah scholars of the Kollel have written over 100 Seforim (mainly Halachic works) relied upon in every corner of the globe in every aspect of Torah!

Among them, are some of the Dayanim in the various Beis Dins:

  • Rav Yehuda Fisher – Member of Badatz Eidit Chareidit
  • Rav Ben Tzion Kook – foremost Talmid of HaGaon Rav Elyashiv ztl
  • Rav Meir Brand – Member of Badatz Machzikey HaDat (Belz)

Some of the most recognized Poskim in Jerusalem:

Rav Meir Cirota, Rav Izaak Kahane, Rav Boruch Yehuda Heimlich, Rav Nachman Nosson Weinstock, Rav Chaim Ehrental, Rav Yoel Mintzberg, Rav Avraham Tzvi Poppenheimand many others.

There are 5 Chaburas in the Kollel.

- Iyun Halachah which covers practical topics in Halocha in major depth. It is run by HaGaon Chaim Erental shlita, a Mot"z (Posek) on the Badatz Eida HaChareidit. It has since completed Hilchos Shabbos as part of a 5 year program and more recently, Brochos, which was a 2 year cycle. Candidates are tested on the highest level by external evaluators. They have now started Hilchos Ribis.

- Kollel Hora'ah, is a Semicha program that delves into Halocha on the highest levels. It is run by HaGaon Rav Moshe Friedman shlita, and the cycle runs for 7 years.

- Hilchos Choshen Mishpat - an intense Dayanus program, led by HaRav Yerachmiel Rabinowitz shlita. Testing is done monthly, and those who complete the program are sought out as Dayanim on various Batei Din.

- The Har Nof Shabbos Kollel. A new branch of the Kollel was started in 2018 in Har Nof in memory of the 5 Kedoshim z"l who gave their lives in the shul attack in 2014 (Rav Chaim Rothman, הי"ד, was a chavrusa of Rav Baruch Tanzer for 22 years). The focus is on Hilchos Shabbos, be'iyun. It provides a high level Beis Medrash for English speakers. The Rosh Kollel is HaRav Gidon Joffe shlita. Shiurim are given, and the Avreichim are tested every month.

- The Brisker Kollel for English speakers, which focuses on studying Shas using the deep Brisker method of learning.

Torah Is Life

What is remarkable about Avreichim, is that Torah is their life - and they have nothing else. Most of the Avreichim are prepared to forgo all the material luxuries of this world, and yet they learn day and night with simcha. The joy that the Avreichim have is felt by everyone who has visited any of the Batei Midrash.

The Mesiras Nefesh for Torah, is unprecedented. It is these 2 factors - sacrifice for Torah and the joy of learning it - is surely the recipe for producing the world's finest.

The Head of the Kollel – Rav Boruch Tanzer

The Kollel is headed by Rav Boruch Tanzer, known to all for his humility and quiet way. Out of sheer love for Klal Yisroel and Torah, Reb Boruch (as he is known), has taken on the yoke of raising funds needed to maintain the Kollel. He goes about this unbelievable task of paying ‘his’ Avreichim, in a very discreet and modest way, avoiding any fame or publicity. He has never missed paying his 279 Avreichim every Rosh Chodesh, on time. That is an incredible feat! He has avoided taking any loans, on the concern that he may not be able to pay them back. Unlike most other institutions, the Kollel does not have one or two main anchor donors – it relies on the many donors who are its partners.

Corona – a terrible blow

But the financial situation has suffered a very harsh setback – Coronavirus. Reb Boruch travels 6-7 times  a year to raise funds, and now he simply can’t. And, as we are all too aware, many potential contributors have been hurt too.

This put the future of 279 Avreichim at risk! Hundreds, and even thousands of family members are at risk. They are people who themselves needy – they rely on his monthly check! What will be with them?

And what will be with that roaring sound of Torah?

SO MANY QUESTION MARKS!

Whether this will continue…is up to you.

With your help, the Kollel and the Torah it produces, will get stronger and stronger. It will thrive as it has done until today. For the sake of Hashem, make a contribution and restore the splendor of His Torah.
